Patch 3.0 - HUNTER Overview

Patch 3.0 is the patch that prepares the World of Wacraft for the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. It includes all the mechanics changes from WotLK. It affects every player, whether or not they have purchased or plan to purchase the expansion.

And it includes enormous changes for hunters and their pets.

This article is a quick overview of those pet changes. More in-depth information is available in the Patch 3.0 FAQ, but this is an excellent place to start.


Pet Skills

Everything you knew about pet skills and training your pet has changed.

You will never need to train your pet again.
Beast Training, loyalty, and training points no longer exist.
Pets now know all their possible skills when they are tamed.
The skills that each family knows have changed.
Pet skills rank up automatically as the pet levels.
Every pet family now has at least one totally unique family skill.
In addition to their family skills, each pet also knows a focus dump, plus Growl and Cower.
The rest of the old skills have turned into talents or base stats.

Pet Talents

In addition to skills, pets also get talents. Pet talent trees work pretty much like hunter talent trees, although a lot of the specifics are different.

There are three pet trees: Cunning, Ferocity, and Tenacity.
Each tree has a slightly different focus. Cunning is slightly more focused on PvP, Ferocity on DPS and Tenacity on tanking. But all three make for good strong pets for most purposes.
Each pet family uses a specific tree. Crabs, for instance, always use the Tenacity tree.
You buy talents for your pet with pet talent points. Pets earn talent points as they level up. Starting at level 20, pets get one talent point every four levels.
Once you buy a talent for your pet, it works very much like a pet skill. You can find purchased talents in the pet's spellbook; you can put them on the pet's action bar and toggle auto-cast on or off.

Pets and Families

Although Patch 3.0 is primarily about mechanics and not content, hunters do get plenty of new beasts to tame.

There are now 32 pet families, including 7 exotic families.
Exotic families can only be tamed by hunters who have purchased the 51-point Beast Mastery hunter talent.
Beast Mastery hunters who respec their talents lose access to their tamed exotic pets until they spec back to Beast Mastery. While they do not have the talent, they can neither call their exotic pets nor take them out of the stable.
Rhinos and Spirit Beasts only exist in Northrend, but Chimaeras, Core Hounds, Devilsaurs, Silithids, and Worms can be tamed by Beast Mastery hunters whether or not they have the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.
In addition, Moths and Wasps can be tamed by any hunter, regardless of spec.
The Owl family is now called Birds of Prey and includes other birds of prey as well as owls.

Pet Care

Patch 3.0 streamlines some of the more tedious aspects of pet care.

Beasts that are more than five levels below the level of the hunter in the wild will automatically level up to be exactly five levels below the hunter when they are tamed.
Stabled pets that are more than five levels below the level of the hunter will automatically level up to be exactly five levels below the hunter when they are removed from the stable.
Pets now require only 10% of the experience of a character of the same level. (They used to require about 16%.)
Hunters now have two extra stable slots available for purchase. That means that you can have four pets in the stable and one with you for a total of five.
Because loyalty no longer exists, pets will no longer run away no matter how unhappy they get.
Happy pets still get a bonus to damage, however, so you will want to keep your pet happy.
In addition to food, there are now several other ways to increase your pet's happiness, including pet talents and glyphs.
The diets of some families has broadened: bats will now eat meat; gorillas, tallstriders and turtles will eat bread; and nether rays will eay fungus.
On the other hand, hyenas no longer eat fruit and serpents no longer eat fish.

Pet Stats

Pet stats -- like health, armor, damage, etc. -- have changed significantly.

Instead of each family having its own set of health, armor and damage modifiers, stat modifiers now correspond to pet talent trees. For example, all Cunning pets have the same health modifier.
Pet stamina now benefits even more from hunter stamina. Pets get 45% of the hunter's stamina added to their own. (Previously it was 30%.)
Pets also benefit from their hunter's hit and critical rates.
Pets now get a base resistance to all elements equal to their level. For example, a level 11 pet will have a base of 11 resistance to Arcane, Fire, Frost, Nature and Shadow damage.
Pets that previously had inferior "caster" stats now have perfectly normal stats.

Still no deer. I want to tame a deer. they are so pretty.
